Eventbrite - Silicon Halton Meetup #85: Business Models and Business Model Design

In this meetup presented by SB Partners, we’ll discuss Business Models and Business Model Design

Your Business Model's Impact

Mustafa Dossajee, Partner at SB Partners will discuss why developing and communicating your business model is important to the growth of your tech business. The ability to communicate your business model to venture capitalists, accountants, and other financial institutions facilitates their understanding and improves their ability to support your success in early stages and when you are scaling up your business.

Business Models / Design

Chris Herbert, co-founder of Silicon Halton and Founder of Mi6 Agency will provide you with an overview of key business model types and business model design. The goal of this meetup is for you to get a better understanding about:

  • business model design vs. product design. What's the difference?
  • business model types
  • the 9 building blocks of a business model
  • the importance of value proposition design and role it has in product, market fit and customer validation

During this talk Chris will draw from his professional experience and apply business model design thinking to some real world scenarios. He'll also do a fast business model design session with members of the audience.

This is the second in a series of talks dedicated to helping entrepreneurs, and those that work for them, improve their chances of being successful. The first, "Financing and Funding - What are Your Options? Ask the Experts , presented by BDC, took place earlier this year.

Topic: Marketing Channels

Following up on some areas for improvement that were uncovered in the January planning session, this month we will begin a series on the art sales and marketing with a review of available marketing channels and ways to test them so we can focus on the fewest things that will make the biggest difference.

The Women in Tech Peer 2 Peer group’s goal is to empower women in business by examining the unique gender based challenges of working in and with technology to effect progressive change within our working and community environments.

Meet ups are generally for women only who work or live in Halton.  Non-Silicon Halton members are welcome.

Each month we'll have a topic for debate, and an opportunity for individuals to share challenges and successes with the group in a safe, supportive setting.

Meetup formats may include dinner discussion meetings, guest speaker presentations, or workshops - depending on the topic.

Topic: What it Takes (Part II)

Inspired by the Canadian women rocking the RIO Summer Olympics and the amazing #WhatItTakes campaign from SportChek (Check out the videos here) we are bringing in mentors and coaches to take the limits off of our beliefs and dare greatly in our careers and with our businesses.

This month we have invited Ballsy member Norine Jones to share her story and tips on the importance of valuing yourself and your business or career.

About the Presenter

Norine Jones began her unique career in the auto industry, starting out working in the body shop, eventually becoming a body shop manager, and then a service manager. Why is her career described as unique already? Because Norine has always been one to take on a challenge and chose her career within male dominated industries from the beginning. This gave her a solid foundation from which to continue building her current position as President of PowerVac Services Hamilton. Lest you think that PowerVac is the name for a house cleaning company, it actually provides services for duct cleaning and mold abatement and removal for home, commercial and industrial projects. Not exactly Molly Maid.

In addition to being a successful business owner, Norine is very active in the volunteer community of Hamilton. She has been participating in Girl Guides of Canada for over 14 years as a unit leader, community camp organizer and Administrative Community Leader. It is very important to Norine to show other girls and women that they too can create their own path and future.

PowerVac Hamilton is a family owned and operated business that Norine’s father took over as General Manager over 25 years ago and eventually bought. Norine joined the company as the Operations Manager and held that position for 9 years. She then moved in to the General Manager role for 2 years. After losing her father just over a year ago, Norine moved in to the role of owner and has been the Lady Boss for the past 1.5 years, officially becoming the President within the past two months.

With 3 cats, 1 dog, 2 daughters and one patient husband, Norine’s life is one of time management, learning and large cups of Early Grey Tea.
